The sad part is that iCab creates cache folders for each letter of the
alphabet. Why does it do this instead of the one cache folder w/o all
the subfolders?

Because the classic OS's file system is much more efficient when the total number of files per folder is kept low. It's a design feature that should have been done in the other browsers.

And besides, you never ever need to open that cache folder. If you don't want iCab to manage it, turn that off in the prefs. Then just trash the whole folder now and then.

Also, random quits of iCab make me dislike it, but not so much as my
not functioning NS.

There's a big diff in the way the browsers use memory in the classic OS.

IE, NS, Moz etc do everything in their own memory partitions. So you need to boost their preferred memory size quite a bit, to 40000K or so.

iCab is a modern Macintosh app. It uses temp memory for the pages. The only time you need extra app memory is if you use a plug-in that doesn't support temp memory - eg: Flash. I've found it's best to set iCab's partition to about 6000K and leave it there.

iCab 2.9.8 is quite stable, I've found. It will crash easily if you mis-manage it - by giving it way too much memory, then your whole system becomes memory poor when iCab tries to get temp memory. If you leave it's partition set properly, then the only crashes I or my clients have had with it are either due to Apple's Java gakking, or Flash. Flash is notorious for poor stability.

iCab 3, I hear, will be released in public beta very soon. It has full CSS, improved JavaScript, etc. Until then... WaMCom Mozilla 1.3.1
