Dear James,
I have a 6500, got tired of "dial-up" & ordered DSL. Well my Server
HAD to use the Phone Co techs to install because the Server used the
phone Co. lines to deliver their service (I don't know if the same
"laws" govern such things elsewhere--it may just be a Calif. thing)..
In any event, when the tech came & walked in, the first thing he said
was "Oh, you've got a Mac!" & his mouth just sort of hung open. I
should have said "OUT" right then & there. They "fiddled around" for
about 3 weeks, with his buddies coming & going" to "help" him. They
never did get me connected to the Internet. They were all using
Windows PC laptops to "check" things, so I don't know what I expected.
I finally gave up & thought I would just have to put up with dial-up.
I was so disappointed, I called "Earthlink" - my Server, & they looked
at my customer "history" & said they had never seen anyone with such a
long history of problems. I told them "I understand you have a
do-it-yourself kit" & they confirmed it. I told them that this wasn't
"brain surgery" & I thought I could do it. They agreed I deserved it &
sent me the "kit" for free. I installed the software, connected the
modem & called Earthlink & they gave me some new settings & ISP
addresses & I "clicked the connect button" & was on the Internet
through DSL. It was a piece of cake. Yeah, I'm 81 years old, but live
in the heart of Silicon Valley & still "have all my marbles", but I
still cannot understand WHY the phone techs could not accomplish in 3
weeks what it took me about a 1/2 hour to do, all told. I still shake
my head over that one!
James, you shouldn't have any problem as long as you have the right
software & modem type for your 6500 & call your ISP Server for new
settings.

Does anyone know of a website or FAQ that will explain (as in plain
English)
step by step how to set up my Mac for DSL? I have a 6500, a Cisco 675
and
Qwest for service.
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/794/675_faq.shtml
...And if that link doesn't work for you, try these ones from BBR:
This one is the hardware forum for Cisco gear:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/equip,cis
Here's the DSL/Mac forum:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/macdsl
And finally, the forum for Qwest users:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/ilec,uswest
I've listed these in the order of (perceived) usefulness.
When I started poking around the Qwest equipment FAQ, the 675 didn't
show up
at all. What I mean is: not only did it not show up under the list of
equipment that Qwest currently "officially" supports, it also didn't
show up
on the list of older *unsupported* equipment that people are currently
using. This is not a good sign, as most BBR posters will use
*anything* to
get online, no matter how old it is, so long as it works.
That's not to say that it won't be possible to use, just that it's not
a
widely-used piece of gear on the BBR forums. Take a look at:
