well were I live the ata cards are dead cheap and I never heard of
any formatting before using,
and I hooked up ata drives found in the garbage and was able to read them,
but why dont you fileshare over ethernet or web or serial ?
the other machine is gone ?

I would buy a ~$20 external USB case for the IDE drive and hook it to
the 8600 with a USB card.
The IDE cards are pretty spendy last I looked; USB cards, you could
find for less, plus you'd have USB on the 8600 for very useful future
use, even if the USB card is the same price as a IDE controller card.

I think there is another problem with the use of an
ATA card. The ones I have used and heard about require
the drive to be formatted after being attached to the
card. The one I have in an 8500 uses some sort of
SCSI formatting. That would destroy the data on the
drive.
I think the use of the external case and USB does not
require this formatting.
