so I'd need an upgraded video board for the video stuff... I am
thinking that this is not such a great spenditure of $$$.. it would
be nice to get 10.4 onto the 8500 w/ G3 +.. but.. eh... it seems to
be not so important. the data part will work though... would it
boot off a CD/DVD?

If you have an available PCI slot, you could get a Wired4DVD card. These provide nice DVD playback even on Macs with PPC604e processors, because the heavy lifting is being done by the Wired4DVD card, not by the Mac CPU and software.

There is a good article about the card on XLR8yourmac.com.

There are no OSX drivers. The card is only supported up to OS 9.x. I don't know if it will work in Classic under OSX, I've never tried that.

It is a pass-through card. That means you normal video output to monitor is plugged into the Wired4DVD card and then your monitor is connected to the Wired4DVDcard and it overlays the DVD imagery on your video output.

The trick would be finding the card.
