It would be useful, but there are problems such as USB ports provide
power to the device so conceivably a serial to USB converter would
need to have an external power supply. Also as mentioned above you
would need something to recognize that a device has been put in and to
indicate to the computer because USB is plug and play. Another major
problem is that I do believe that USB is much faster then a serial
port. For these reasons and possibly many more no one has created a
Serial to USB converter. It is like creating a PowerPC emulator for
the 68xxx. I believe why he can't use a PCI card is because the 5200
only has a PDS.
