Had something very similar just after I had been in the machine to put
in more memory. I had accidently slightly disloged the cable going to
the CD drives. Didn't realize the error that I was seeing was that
problem. I have a separate ATA/100 controller for the hard drives and
one of the IDE channels is shutoff (actually broken). I found it when I
couldn't find the cd to reinstall a program. Opened the case and found
the bad connection. This would be the first place to look.
