David....Jeff didn't say "you know the person".....he said "you know the
person MEANT to send it to you".....this is still risky but usually when
someone I know and TRUST sends me a file and says in the email that it's a
specific file he/she wants me to see, it's a lot safer than a file that
comes attached to a mail from someone I know, but there is no mention in the
email that the person knew they were attaching it

however, I scan EVERTHING before I open it becuz students send me
virus-infected files all the time....however, when a file comes attached to
an email and there is no mention of the file within the email.....I don't
even bother to open it.....I just reply to the email asking if they meant to
send me an attachment and what is it

Jeff, your comment brought me out of my lengthy hibernation.
I accept the part of your comment about the virus scanner.
However, I'm always amazed by the second recommendation.
Do people whom you know have fewer viruses than those you don't know?
Is a file safe because you know the sender?
Do you really know, check, and verify what is going on inside the computers
of people whom you know?
I have seen this recommendation many times, and I never understood the logic
behind it.
Please explain.
