sounds to me like McAfee is indeed at least involved in the problem,
Virginia....as much as you are hesitant to uninstall it, it may be necessary
if no one else can help you more, at least I can give you the instructions
for COMPLETELY uninstalling McAfee.....I would think this is what you need
to do....completely uninstall it and reinstall it clean:
straight from McAfee's website:
Complete Manual Removal of V*rusScan 4.0.x
IMPORTANT: Before beginning to remove V*rusScan 4.0.x manually from your
computer make sure to backup the Registry. This will safeguard your Windows
95 or Windows 98 installation. You can recover your Windows 95 or Windows 98
configuration by restoring the backup if something goes wrong.
How to Backup the Registry
1. Click on Start. The Start menu will appear.
2. Click on Run from the Start menu.
3. Type REGEDIT in the Open field.
4. Click the OK button. The Registry Editor window will appear.
5. Click on Registry on the menu bar.
6. Click on Export Registry File.
7. In the File Name field type "backup"
8. In the Save In field be sure that the desktop is selected (if it is not,
click on the pull down menu and select 'desktop.')
9. Select All in the Export range box.
10. Click on the Save button.
You now have a backup of your Registry saved as "backup" on your desktop.
NOTE: If you need to restore the Registry you can double click on the
"backup" file you created and it will be restored. However, after finishing
your editing and testing to be sure all is running properly you will want to
delete the "backup" file so that no mistakes are made and the old registry
is restored.
How to Edit the Registry
1. Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2. Click the plus sign (+) next to SOFTWARE
3. Click once on the McAfee folder icon.
4. Press the Delete key on the keyboard.
5. A Confirm Key Delete window will appear with the question, "Are you sure
you want to delete this key?" Click the Yes button to delete the key.
6. Click the plus sign (+) next to Microsoft.
7. Scroll down and click the plus sign (+) next to Windows.
8. Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentVersion.
9. Click the folder icon next to Run.
10. On the right side of the window, locate and delete the following
entries:
AvconsoleEXE
McAfeeWebScanX
Vshwin32EXE
VsStatEXE
VsecomrEXE
11. On the left side of the window, click on the folder icon next to
RunServices.
12. Locate Vshwin32EXE from the right hand window and press delete. Locate
McAfeeWebScanX from the right hand window and press delete.
13. On the left side of the window, click the plus sign (+) next to
Uninstall.
14. Locate and delete the McAfee V*rusScan folder.
15. On the left side of the screen locate the folder named SharedDLLs.
Left-click once on the name of this folder so it is highlighted. Now look
on the right side of the screen. You will notice there is a Name column and
a Data column. Locate the following items under the Name column and delete
them.
NOTE: In order to view the entire length of the name column you will need
to increase the size of the Registry Editor window so it fills your whole
screen. You may also need to increase the length of the Name column by
left-clicking the divider line located between the Name and Data column
headings, holding down the mouse button, and dragging the divider line to
the right.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCAFECOM.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCKRNL.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCSCAN32.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCUTIL.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHIELD.VXD
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHINIT.VXD
16. If V*rusScan 4.0.x is running on a network with a Microsoft Exchange
Server, do the following, otherwise skip to number 17:
a. Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
b. Click the plus sign (+) next to SOFTWARE
c. Click the plus sign (+) next to Microsoft
d. Click the plus sign (+) next to Exchange
e. Click the plus sign (+) next to Client
f. Click the plus sign (+) next to Extensions
g. On the right side of the window, locate and delete Exchange Scan
17. Close the Registry Editor by clicking on the X in the upper right hand
corner.
How to Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT File
1. Click on Start. The Start menu will appear.
2. Click on Run in the menu.
3. Type SYSEDIT in the Open field.
4. Click the OK button. The System Configuration Editor window will appear.
The top window will be labeled C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
5. Delete the following lines, which are near the top, by highlighting the
line and then pushing the Delete button on the keyboard:
C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~2\BOOTSCAN.EXE C:\
@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE
@ECHO OFF
6. Scroll down to find and delete the following lines, by highlighting the
line and then pushing the Delete button on the keyboard:
REM Environment Settings For McAfee V*rusScan
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRA~1\NETWOR~1\MCAFEE~1
7. Save the file by clicking on File on the menu and select Save.
8. Close the System Configuration Editor by clicking on the X in the upper
right hand corner of the large window.
How to Restart Your Computer
1. Click on Start. The Start menu will appear.
2. Click on Shut Down from the menu. The Shut Down Windows dialog box will
appear.
3. Select Restart.
4. Click the Yes button.
Your computer will automatically restart itself. Wait for Windows to load
and go to the next list.
How to Delete McAfee V*rusScan Files
1. Double click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
2. Double click the C: drive.
3. Double click the Program Files Folder. The contents of the Program Files
directory will appear.
4. Double click on the Network Associates file. The contents of the Network
Associates directory will appear.
5. Click once on the McAfee V*rusScan folder.
6. Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
7. A box will appear asking you if you're sure that you want to delete these
files. Click the Yes button.
8. Close all open windows.
How to Delete the McAfee VxD Files
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Highlight Find then click on Files or Folders. The Find Files dialog
box will then appear.
3. In the Look In field type in C:\Windows\System
4. In the Named field type in MCAFECOM.DLL then click the Find Now button.
5. The computer will then search for the file. When the file is found it
will be displayed at the bottom of the dialog box.
6. Once the file is found right-click on the small icon to the left of the
file's name. A pop-up menu will appear.
7. Left-click on Delete to delete the file. Answer Yes to any prompts
about deleting the file.
8. Repeat steps 4 - 7 for the following files: MCKRNL.VXD, MCSCAN32.VXD,
MCUTIL.VXD, VSHIELD.VXD, VSHINIT.VXD.
9. Once all of these files have been deleted close the Find Files dialog
box by clicking the X in the top right corner.
How to Remove McAfee V*rusScan from the Start Menu
1. Click on Start. The Start menu will appear.
2. Click on Settings from the Start menu.
3. Click on Taskbar from the pullover menu. The Taskbar Properties dialog
box will appear.
4. Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
5. Click the Remove button.
6. Click on the McAfee V*rusScan from the list.
7. Click the Remove button.
8. Click the Close button and then the OK button.
V*rusScan 4.0.x has been removed from your computer.
