One of two things are happening. Either your power supply is dying or your cpu heat sink/fan is dying. I used to experience the piercing sound and the alert on my P3 before the heat sink/fan died on it. Both the heatsink/fan and the power supply are affordable and easy to replace. If your cpu heat sink dies then the cpu may overheat and be rendered useless at which point you would be looking for at least a new cpu and heatsink and at worse a new motherboard too.
