And another problem with that 'generic page' that I see for win98 updates, is this:
"Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package The Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package provides a workaround to a recently identified issue with computers that have the combination of Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk drives with large caches and newer/faster processors. Computers with this combination may risk losing data if the hard disk shuts down before it can preserve the data in its cache. " This NOT one of the 'critical win98 updates'. I remember seeing that on MY computer when it went to the update site a few weeks back, and that was listed under "driver updates" which is something you NEVER EVER want to install!! I found out the hard way. I installed that on this PC and it almost 'ruined' it!! If not for that knowledge, I would have clicked that link to download that on this other PC and it would have screwed it up as well. That's why it's so important I get to the 'standard windows update page', where it 'scans' your PC because there all the updates are CATEGORIZED under subtitles (so I then know to avoid the 'driver updates area). Everywhere else they are not categorized. A footnote....3 times in the past I installed things under the 'driver updates category' and EVERY TIME it destroyed something!! first time was a sound card driver update (ESS Allegro 4 channel). After that, I never had audio from WMP files!! Had to REFORMAT to fix it!! Another time was updates for my ATI AIW Pro video card. PC never started in any other way other that safe mode after that!! Reformat again was ALL that fixed it! This last time was that IDE driver update mentioned above. Thankfully, I first saw it when I was using a test hard drive and installed it on that. So, when it got screwed up from that update, I still had my main good HD. What that update did was create yellow marks in the device manager for my ATA 66 integrated controller that could not be removed! To show you they really were corrupt, or just plain horrible, a few days after that they were removed from the update site! I guess MS got tons of complaints about that one. So, any of you BEWARE about installing ANYTHING under the "Driver updates" area at the windows update site. ALWAYS get driver updates from the manufacturer's site ONLY. Evidently MS has some screwed up version of the manufacturer's driver updates. -Clint God Bless Us All Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Kaulback" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Clint, remember that M$ will be dropping support for 98 later this year so it would be beneficial to download the updates whole in the event that the links for them are removed completely from the site. If you do here http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/default.asp you can do this as well you can order the Windows 98 Customer Service Pack which basically updates 98 to the SE level. As well there is the win98 corporate page here http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp Once I started doing on-site work I began to download all updates for 95/98/98SE/NT4 and burn them to disc. It's just so convenient. HTH Peter Kaulback In the hour of 07:20 AM 3/9/2002 -0600, [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Clint Hamilton spoke this: >Could someone please tell me what has happened to the windows >update site for a NEW win98 installation????!!!!!!!!!! It's >GONE. Score another for MS jerks!! How the hell do they >expect you to update win98 now!! I just installed win98 on >another PC here (to give to my Dad ;-), and like I've done >thousands of times before (after the yellow marks are gone in >the DM) I immediately go to the update site. Not anymore! >Some page comes up and states "windows update will no longer >work with your computer"!!!!!! On that page is all sorts of >links to click and NONE bring you to the typical regular >update site!! I click the "windows 98" update link in the >start menu (as always) and the page that comes up is full of >all sorts of BS for ME and SE, and all sorts of other things >I've never even seen before!! I even went to my PC and >clicked the update icon, got that URL and the other PC still >will not go to the regular update page! So, how the h*ll is >someone supposed to update a win98 PC now just after a >reformat or new install? I was just about to reformat MY >main HD, and it's good thing I didn't and found out about >this before I did! > >A link would be appreciated. :-) >Thanks, >-Clint ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
