Here's another MS screw-up. As those of you that use IE know, the default icon for URL's or URL shortcuts is that 'blue e on white background'. If it's a shortcut, it will by default have those annoying shortcut arrows on them as all shortcuts do. Using tweakui, I have that disabled, so no arrow or "shortcut to..." prefix is added on any shortcuts. Well, MS has managed to circumvent that thanks to the latest patch from March 7, 2002. Now, EVERY SINGLE shortcut (not just IE shortcuts) has that annoying white arrow on them! There is NO way of removing this back to what it was before the update. Tweakui STILL shows "add no arrow to shortcuts". It is NOT just this PC because it is doing this on every PC here. So it's not some windows corruption or error. Right clicking and looking at properties STILL SHOWS the icon that it SHOULD be, the icon that I WANT it to be WITHOUT an arrow! Also, clicking 'change icon' shows the NON arrow icon as well! Oddly... opening the shell32.dll file and looking at it's icons, does not have the typical blue 'e' on white background anymore! It is gone, and instead of it being highlighted as the current icon in the shell32.dll folder, it has been replaced with that 'generic' icon windows uses for unknown file types and it's highlighted instead as being the current icon used! And still, windows is showing all URL shortcuts as this new arrowed blue 'e' icon (even though it's not even listed in the icon folder!) I even ran tweakui's icon repair.
For the life of me, I Cannot understand what this latest update would have to do with shortcut arrows. The update that caused this is: "This update resolves the "Unchecked Buffer in Windows Shell Could Lead to Code Execution" security vulnerability in Windows 98, and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-014. Download now to prevent a malicious user from running programs on your computer." So, does anyone know how to get rid of these arrows and put the shortcut icons to programs or files back to what they were?
