Yeah, NAV. ;-) I know, but I'm not talking about just
disabling it, but *TOTALLY UNLOADING* it. Just disabling
doesn't accomplish the same thing since it's still running in
the background and will, and does interfere with the
installation of software/drivers (in XP). I'm appalled that
the Symantec idiots would remove this VALUABLE NEEDED
feature in new releases! And I'm also appalled and horrified
at how many FEWER features are on 2002 & 2003!

I found my 2003 version and it's even worse than 2002! With
the old version 5, it only loads ONE thing @startup and under
cont-alt-del. These newer versions load SEVERAL, and even
when you go to MSCONFIG's startup tab to UNCHECK them, they
are STILL loaded! Newer versions have absolutely no control
over the level of Heuristic Bloodhound scanning, and I also
now see in addition to that; no option to stop NAV from
destroying your floppy driver every single time you startup or
shutdown; several fewer alert options; several fewer scanning
options; incredibly no option to simply delete a v*rus!; no
option to scan a file when it's just 'moved'; no activity log
options (where v5.xx has SEVERAL); .....and even more. Plus
versions 2002 & 2003 even consume 6% MORE resources! What
idiots Symantec are to pull stunts such as this. I didn't even
try 2000 or 2001 because from what I saw, they don't support XP.
You would not believe how many webpages I found about NAV
bashing and complaints when I was searching for AV software
info. I can now say I fully agree with them, I now see why so
many hate NAV 20xx (v.8.xx & 9.xx) and go to other AV software.

Well, I got so ticked at this that I tried AVG 6,
http://www.grisoft.com and man was I glad. Talk about a
blessing in disguise NOT being able to no longer use NAV 5!
Not only can (AVG) be easily and immediately unloaded so
you can install software, drivers, run scandisk, defrag, etc...
but I ran some tests, and Norton failed several (4) of them,
while AVG passed them all! The only thing I don't like about
AVG is having to wait 30 days for new definition updates. If
on the 1st day AFTER a new update some new malicious
codes are found, you have to wait 30 days to be protected
from them. The AVG people really should do something
about this, and could be why they have not surpassed NAV
in popularity. Unfortunately AVG consumes 3% more resources
that NAV 5, but less than 2002 & 2003.

If any of you want to test your AV software's capability for
email and browser security, see these links:

Sent this earlier Clint but I forgot that certain words get
rejected.

I guess you are talking about Norton Anti-*****. You can
disable auto
protect by right clicking on the icon in the system tray in
both the 2002
and 2003 versions. This isn't the same thing as unloading but
accomplishes
the same thing. I personally have never had any problems with
Norton when
installing programs and only turn off auto protect when a
program
specifically calls for it.
