Ann,

Web site is a derivative of World Wide Web. It has been shortened to Web.

Back in the early '90's, the World Wide Web was referred to as W3.

I'm sure there is no stock answer to this question.

As a retired English teacher, I'd like to offer my two cents worth. I agree
with Clint that it probably should be spelled website. As to capitalizing
it, I assume that the same old rule would apply. If it refers to just any
website, it would not be capitalized, but if it is part of the name of a
particular website it would then be considered a proper noun and would be
capitalized. As an example, building is common noun and is usually not
capitalized, but if it is used as a part of the name of a particular
building, it is. For instance....Empire State Building. Ann Parker
