I must have missed an earlier post. You have a cable modem/wireless router combo? Sounds like this is a wireless problem. Some wireless systems have had difficulties where you lose the connection and can't reconnect until you reset the base unit. You say your laptop works. I assume you are saying that it is working even when your desktop isn't. Look for software and firmware updates for both your desktop and the base unit. You have a Microsoft wireless network card? You might consider trying another brand.
