384 MB is optimum for Win98.  I guess 512 seems to work for you.  I suggest
that anything over that would be counterproductive, as you say, unless you
wanted to run a 128 MB RAM Disk or something. WIn95 and Win98 both had some
memory management issues.

I run Win98SE with 256 on a 650 Mhz P IIIE, and have not had any indication
of anything but optimum performance for the last two years. I do run some
heavy duty graphics programs as well.

I don't have much experience with XP, but from what I can gather - 512 is
optimum for that as well - unless you are running very heavy duty graphics
or a
server or something.
