Could be a bad CMOS Battery.
Boot from a floppy or CD and see if the HD is visible.
If so, try fixing the MBR or reinstalling.
If not, you probably need a HD.

A friend's laptop is showing the following error:

"Disk I/O error. Replace the disk and then press any key"
(There is no floppy in the drive, so I assume it is an HD error)

I haven't seen the computer yet, and don't know what make or OS it has, or
any other details. My guess is that the hard disk has gone kaputt or
something gone wrong with the BIOS on the mobo.
