Like Ralph said, that could be *ONLY* the chipset and not the actual modem
brand. I come across this a lot since the customers usually lose their
driver CD(s). If this is a driver issue, you can *sometimes* get a suitable
driver by searching for the chipset #. This will be on the largest chip on
the modem. Start by searching for the ENTIRE #, then if you can't find
anything start removing characters after any - or / . Like 12345-123 it may
be, and if you find nothing on that, try 12345-12, etc.

Usually on modems there is either a sticker with an ID string on it and part
of that can be the model #, or on the modem you'll see a # or two
silk-screened. Search for them the same way. It's best to do this first
since these would be the actual modem model # more so than the chipset #.
You can post all the #'s you see on it and I can usually pick the model #.

Is this a stand alone modem or a sound card/modem combo? If the latter,
drivers will be more difficult to find. If it's a stand-alone, sometimes
sound card drivers must be installed first, or sometimes sound card drivers
must be installed AFTER the modem drivers. This just depends on the
hardware. That PCI communications device in the DM could be for the sound
card, OR the modem.

Even after finding the correct drivers, you can still have problems if the
COM ports are not correct. Some modems must be on specific COM ports to
work, so you may have to change that around. If you changed anything around
in the BIOS, this could also be a problem. Even if you didn't change
anything, if the PC was disconnected from power for too long, it could have
been cleared. One way to check that is go in the BIOS and see if the date is
still correct. If it is, then you can at least rule that out.

I have a customer computer I had to run F-Disk on to get ME to install. Now I
have every thing up and
running except the modem.
The modem is Conexant and seems to install fine, but an error when I try to
dial out.
In system properties, the only error I have is this PCI communications
device. I can not find good drivers
on the set-up disk or the ME disk.
This is an HP computer, quite a few years old as it came with WIN 98...
Can anyone think of something I may be missing on this install?
Also, This thing is installing two COM ports. I have the modem set on COM 1.
I've uninstalled all these and the sound card drivers and restarted, but I
still come back to this.
Thank you.
Jeff
