Happy holidays, Howard. The picture is actually a hoax-I believe it's the control room of a submarine, and someone doctored it up to fool the unwary. You can read about it here: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/computer.asp You need both the "Load Power Profile" entries. All your entrieds look valid to me, and the resource use seems normal as well. Theoretically, you can get down to 10% before you have a problem. I've seen some computers do this easily, and others will choke long before 10%. If you don't use the keyboard features, you can delete that line. Time for that new Dell! ********************************************************* Hello again . (30 Gig HD, 256 RAM, Windows 98, 5y/o HP Pavilion)
With AVG and ZoneAlarm in Systray, the opening resources seem in My Computer > Properties > Performance is 74%. Running in MISCONFIG , Startup is: SystemTray (must be kept running) LoadPowerProfile (two lines, both the same) Keyboard Manager (must be kept running for the keyboard features to be operating) AVG7_CC AVG7_AMSVR Zone Labs Client TweakUi TrueVector (also part of the ZoneLabs in the System folder) I unchecked one of the LoadPowerProfile entries and all AVG and both ZoneAlarm references and rebooted. Upon clicking Restart, I first got an "Illegal message" window and then it rebooted successfully. It opened with 88% resources free and after typing something in MSWord, it dropped down to 84% free. I rebooted again and this time no illegal message (that's good) and the 88% and 84% repeated. I opened this short MSWord document to record these findings two times and while it remained open, the resources dropped down to 80%. When closing the document, it returned to 84%. I once read that 84% is acceptable. Interesting note . before logging on to the Internet, I opened AVG Control Center and ZoneAlarm, and the resources immediately dropped down to 70% free. With this MSWord document open (and all I have is this message on it; I'm recording these findings as I go along), the resources free is 67%. Logging on to the Internet and I'm now down to 63% free. Questions: 1) Which of the above Startup lines should I keep checked? 2) Is the difference of 10% in free resources acceptable? 3) Is that last drop down to 70%, 67%, and 63% normal? I ask because before I even play a game of Solitaire, I'll have to reboot ;-) and that's no way to live . Harold Btw . knowing I can't send any attachment, for those with many years experience with computers, here is a picture found in a 1954 Popular Mechanics Magazine, showing what Rand Corporation envisioned the 1904 computer to be. It speaks about "teletype interface" and "Fortran language" (means nothing to me). Only way I can show it to anyone interested was to put it on my site. Here it is if interested (I don't know why I have to right click where the picture should be and click "show picture" but that's another matter. Anyone know the reason for that, please let me know.
