If you're talking about a square 4 "pin" connector: most new
supplies are P4 approved, and the 4 pin cable on the PS goes to
the mobo of a P4 mobo. These are called a "P4 power connector"
or "Aux 12V connector". Most older P4 boards had both that
connector, and one of your flat 4 pin Molex connectors so they
could be used with supplies that did not have the square power
connector. But you CANNOT USE BOTH, only one connector can be
used. Most new P4 boards only have the square 4 pin connector.

So, if you don't have a P4 computer, you don't use the 4 pin
square connector. If it IS a P4 PC, and you don't have the 4
pin square connector on the mobo, then you have to have one of
the other connectors I mentioned above. If you don't connect
power to it though, the PC just won't boot.

I don't know what could be causing your problem. You don't say
anything about the type of computer. Assuming it's not a name
brand proprietary PC (one you built), and it uses a standard
PS, this should not be happening. It's possible if it's a name
brand PC that it uses a proprietary mobo and special PS, that
may explain it--since it may require special "switching
functions". If not, then I guess it's possible the PS is
flaky.

I'm back with the powersupply questions again. <G> Finally
installed the 500
watt power supply I bought 10 weeks ago. Didn't help my cooling
problem but
now when I shut down WinXP goes through the motions but the
hardware doesn't
turn off like before. The fans are still running after Windows
shuts down.
Before I would get a notice on the monitor "no video signal",
not now.
Windows seems to be shutting down properly as I am not seeing
it do a scan
check when I turn the computer on.

The directions said something about a 20 prong cable and a 4
prong cable. I
hooked the 20 prong one to the motherboard but not the 4 prong
one. The old
powersupply didn't use a 4 prong cable. I wouldn't know where
to hook the 4
prong cable anyways. Is this the problem or did I do something
else wrong.
The computer is working as I'm using it now. It just doesn't
turn the power
off at shut down.
