Hi Dale,

AMD 64 Socket 939 Processor
ASUS A8V-Deluxe / SATA / RAID /IEEE 1394 / Mainboard
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket939/a8v-d/overview.htm
or
AMD 64 Socket 939 Processor
ASUS A8V-E Deluxe / SATA / RAID /IEEE 1394 / Mainboard
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket939/a8v-e-d/overview.htm

Either will support 4GB ram

I still like the tried and true and what I Spec for most business use is.
Supports 3GB ram
AMD Socket A
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7n8x/overview.htm No SATA support but the a7n8x delux has SATA, Firewire, IDE and 2 NIC's if you can still find them.

In case you haven't guessed I like AMD processors and Asus mainboards. Sound and Network capabilities are built in on most motherboards today. There is no real reason to avoid either as they both work very well. You can always add a better quality Sound card later. Network cards I would not worry much about the on board ones they are fine.

I've thought that I'd like to build my next computer. At first blush, it
seems many of the components are easily chosen - except the motherboard.

Does anyone have favorites, stay-aways, etc.?

I want, basically, a 3GHz CPU (P4 or AMD?), room for 2GB RAM, no
integrated sound/video, SATA capability for the future, USB/Firewire ...

Help?

Thanks.
