Hi Tom,
Check your Internet Options in control panel, look on the Connections tab see if they are set correctly there. The Never Dial a connection is what I use on a lan connected PC.

I made the network changes EarthLink says to make, obtaining an IP address automatically, and disabling DNS but nothing goes.
All cables are connected and the modem seems to be working properly.
The NIC is integrated into the motherboard and is a 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940).
Operating system is Windows 98 SE.
