Yes, still very busy with the Google brain hemorrhage. Like I mentioned, set them all to "Ask" then you'll know what's causing it. I'll send you a screenshot off-list of my Sygate App's, and a batch file I use for the update site. You do not want that M$ updates running all the time in the background, nor BITS. Set M$ auto updates to "manual" under "services". Also set "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" (BITS) to manual. Each of the files that make up the batch file need to be opened in Notepad (or right click and "edit" where applicable) and change the paths in each file to reflect your setup. Actually technically it's not a batch file but a vbs script file plus 2 batch files that do the job. Once you've changed the paths in each of the files, create shortcut to "Start.bat", then click IT INSTEAD of the Windows Update icon/shortcut. It will automatically launch the needed Services and IE, then shut them all down after you leave the update site. -Clint
God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner OrpheusComputing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "LarryB" < Thanks Clint I will change how I have it presently set. ( to ask.) I have been explaining my problem the last couple of days and figured you were real busy as I kinda expected a reply from you. I mean that in a good way. When I go to Start>contol panel>MS update I get a screen that indicates I do not have a MS operating system. I also use FP2003 and when I select the help files and then request or select something that requres IE and us Java script it comes up with a script error. If I turn my FW off it is fine. I can see nothing in the Traffic logs in Sygate in or out that would cause this. So I do not know what to change. I have updated all software involved to no avail. I am now waiting for something from Sygate. LarryBrowning K & L Electronics Support-OrpheusComputing. com wrote: ********************************************************************** It's not a good idea to set that to "allow", it should be set to "ASK", since that process in contacted by M$ and a host of others when they have no business doing so. That's how a lot of malicious or at least "questionable" sniffs and probes take place. I can't see who posted this originally, but whomever you are, don't ever set anything in Sygate (or any FW for that matter) to "Allow" UNLESS you KNOW it is totally benign. For example, it's ok of course to allow OE, IE, and other apps that regularly have to access the net. When in doubt, set it to "Ask" then you can train it properly as time goes by. If this is the update site you're speaking of, what Karl mentioned "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services (svchost. exe)" is one that you have to set to "Ask" then when you go to the site allow it (thanks to the new Windows update site!). But don't ever tell Sygate to always remember the setting because when some malicious places tries to access your PC via that service or access that service, it will be able to do so unimpeded. -Clint ********************************************************************* ----- Original Message ----- ************************************************************************ From: "Karl Springer" On 15 Jun 2005 at 12:47 -0400, LarryB wrote, at least in part: Larry wrote at least in part: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Thru the help from others it turned out to be my Sygate Personal Firewall that was keeping my from solving these problems.
