Vern:
If the computer was "loading" (CPU running
normally) and the CPU fan running, the combination
would not have gotten as hot as you described in 30
seconds. My guess is that part of the CPU was shorted
either internally on the mainboard and heated up so fast.
The heat probably stopped the CPU from running and the
computer shut down. The old power supply probably
burned out from the overload caused by the short
on the CPU and with no voltage, the
power supply fan did not run. Did you check inside the
old power supply for a burned out fuse? It is very remote
that a stopped power supply fan could cause the CPU/
fan combination to burn up.
You could try replacing the CPU, but keep in mind
that the short causing the overheating of the CPU could
still be on the mainboard.
BTW, the symptoms of an overheated CPU are that
it stops running and depending on the computer,
the computer will shut down.
