I have a folder on the desktop where I once put a copy of my start menu.
Even after deleting most of the material in it, and after renaming the
remaining folders to a, b, c, (all empty)., I still cannot delete them. I
keep getting the message that this "Start menu" is a Windows system
folder, and cannot be deleted. What do I do?

You may have discovered this already but you can make the start menu on
WinXP look like the start menu you are used to with Win98 by right
clicking on start and choosing properties and then classic start menu. I'm
still using the classic start menu.
Now the folder. This is on your Win98 system correct? Right click on the
folder and look at the attributes, e.g. system, hidden, etc. See if it
will let you change those. Another way would be to figure out exactly
where in your file system the folder is and then boot to dos and delete
it. Make sure you are deleting the correct folder.

Thanks for the classic Start menu, Ben; for a whole week I couldn't make
sense of that new look. Only my opinion, but since the classic is so much
easier to use, they should make that view the default and give the option of
changing to this more difficult look (which appears to have five different
sections on the first level); I'm glad to be back to the old look.
And no, Ben ... these folders are on my XP desktop (Win98 is now in my
granddaughter's hands where for her needs it will be very sufficient). The
Properties windows of these folders have neither "Read only" nor "Hidden"
checked. Also, in the "Advanced" properties, nothing is checked there
either. It's almost like I cannot fool the system and it knows that once
upon a time, these particular folders were somehow associated with the Start
menu itself or with the Startup folder (where neither one I know can be
deleted).
Seems I have this system one week and I'm ready to do my first system
restore. What's holding me back is that the R/W CDs that worked so well with
98 are doing a number on me here in XP. Another email re the R/W CDs will
follow. --- Harold
