Hello again ... Compaq/HP Pavilion with Windows XP, a 160 GB harddrive, 521
MB memory, and plenty of work ahead of me until I become familiar with this
new system.
Having trouble with the R/W CDs in this new Windows XP system. In Wind98
there was a folder called Adaptec where one of the files in it was used to
format the R/W CDs, and it all worked well, eventually giving me a 700 MB CD
that worked like a floppy (btw, I no longer have a floppy drive on this
computer).
What I did on this new computer was put that same R/W CD, where I had all my
programs backed up, into the E-drive (on this computer, the D-drive is used
for a "Recovery Partition" containing files used for a system recovery). And
from the E-drive, copied all the folders onto my XP desktop (all in one
folder, of course). And the files all behaved well in that desktop folder.
Now here is where things change . when copying those files into a new (I
bought new R/W CDs because maybe the old CDs were formatted according to the
98 system), all the files changed into "Read only" and what's worse, they do
not allow for any change in that attribute. New files can be added and
deleted but when added, they are all slightly grayed out indicating to me
that something had to be done to the disk before I copied the material from
the desktop.
The Help section does not explain anything about formatting R/W CDs so does
anyone know what can be the problem here? Better yet, does anyone know what
might be the solution here :-)? I've seen unbelievable wild things here on
this E-drive. I once took the R/W CD out of the drive, and all the files
were still listed there (and usable) --- Harold
