I would try running the XP repair utility when booting from the XP disk.
If it doesn't clear up the issue then a clean install of XP may be required.
It doesn't sound like a hardware issue. If the system runs in safe mode
without problems then there is something a miss in the loading of XP itself.
I have the same board as you state for my kids system and it has
performed well from the start.

Absolutely nothing except for AVG !! Also I'm loading at the moment in
diagnostic mode so there's nothing that could load. For 60 seconds
everything is fine , then boom, CPU usage jumps from a few % to 100% and
the computer hangs. Not enough time to play with the drivers.
The swap file is 384MB and the HD has 32 GB free space.

So what is loading at startup?
Any big apps like an office suite, security tools, java dependent apps?
How big is the swap file?
How much room is left on the hdd?

Hi . I have a client with Pentium 4 2.4Ghz, 256MB DDR, 40 GB HD,
running XP Pro SP1
Motherboard is Asus P4S533.
Runs fine in Safe Mode but in normal mode starts ok then within 60
seconds slows down until it grinds to a halt!.
Ran AVG latest etc. but computer was never connected to internet so
no problems.
In MSCONFIG I did a diagnostic startup with same bad result.
So, how can Safe Mode be OK and Diagnostic startup not?
If , as I suspect, it may be a memory problem , why it ok in Safe Mode?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks
