The maximum size of hard drive a given system can accept is determined
by the BIOS. So the P3 should by all means be able to accept the 40 gig
drive as most BIOS would accept drives in this range usually. Similarly
the P1 should be able to accept the 7.5 gig as most BIOS would accept
drives up to 8.4 gig. Check for BIOS updates for said systems from the
respective vendors.
If you do not know the vendor of the motherboard then use a utility like
Everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en
However, when you install any new hard drive in a system you must be
sure to have the jumpers correctly set, the BIOS must see the drive
properly, and the drive should be clean and formatted.

Hi Everyone
I have a question to ask about Hard Drives. Can I put a 40Gig h/d into
a Pentium 3 PC or does it not work. I have been given a 40G drive by a
friend who upgraded his P4 with a 120G drive. When I put it into my pc
and try to Boot up I get an "IO Error " message. Does any one have any
answers for me.
Also When I try to put a 7,5G drive into my P1 I get the same sort of
error there. What is the maximum size drive a P1 can take???
