Jeff is right, I must have damaged some file necessary to the proper working
of the Search applet (whatever it's called; "search assistant" sounds good).
Going back to a previous period didn't help; file must have been missing or
damaged. Ben's link is excellent, taking you to the top 10 FAQ's for Windows
XP. Now I'm going to wait for someone in this forum to ask the right
question; boy am I going to sound smart.
Regarding this Search thing, not having the original Windows (XP) CD, I
finally fixed it by restoring the entire system. Companies like Compaq send
a "Recovery CD" which installs the system and also some individual
applications, but only what they deem appropriate. I don't mind doing this
(although was hoping I wouldn't have to) but it does put the system back
into the original state and each time I get better in deciding what is
needed and what configurations are best. That's the way it is when you are
retired; you do whatever you want to do. --- Harold
