Hugh,
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad it's not just me.
When I go to the map and click on view full map, I show:
My laptop- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -my router(network)
name------Gateway-----Internet
|
|
My desktop name(connected via Ethernet-------- Switch
I hope this shows up OK.
I would assume I should be able to click on the desktop Icon to view it's
files, but I can't. It has been set on private
The only thing wireless is my laptop. Right before this, I was able to
connect with my previous laptop, so I figure there is a setting here in
Vista causing the problem
I've done diagnose and repair and that has not detected any problems, I
guess since I can still connect to the Internet through the wireless, just
not the desktop or add a network printer.

No idea on the sleep thing, but Vista networking seriously sucks. What
used to be very simple has become cumbersome and complicated.
Make sure you have a "private" network, and enable file sharing and
printer sharing in Network center.
What do you mean by a "Switch"? Is this a hub of some kind? Usually you
would plug straight into the router, or use wireless.
