From Harold (one of the original questions regarding granddaughter's new Toshiba laptop)
<snip> 1. Where are the original screensavers to be found? <snip> --- Harold

From: Hugh Vandervoort
Screensavers are .scr files. Use Vista's search feature to find them. My guess is they are in the Windows folder, but I don't know. Why do you want to know? I'll bet you're removing the ones you don't use. --- Hugh

This bet you'd lose but I can understand the guess. Yes, there was a time I'd be removing those savers I don't intend to use, keeping only the "blank". Now I keep them all "just in case". Reason I asked is that I like to put a folder in the Start menu called "Screensavers" with all the shortcuts to those savers. Then I'll pick one of the shortcuts and go to Properties and add a "Shortcut Key" (let's say J or comma; two keys I can easily find even in the dark), and if I want to immediately put the screensaver on for any reason, it's Ctrl+Alt+Shortcut key.

It's no problem on my XP but with my granddaughter's Vista, things seem very different. I think I did try *.scr with no results. I'll try it again when she's here

Regarding:
2. How do you make all files visible?
3. How do I stop the mouse-overs? Files are opening up all around me without my permission.

I'll keep looking around. Strange that I couldn't find the "make all files visible" option which of course is easy to find in 95 and in XP. And once, by accident (which I don't know if I'll find it again), I did come across some configuration window where mouse-overs can be stopped. I was in a hurry, she had to leave, maybe it'll happen again.

The recycle bin is back; it was very early in my "deletion spree" so I easily reinstalled the system.

However, I know that in XP, if you want to create a recycle bin or change the name of it, in the registry you navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}... and that's where it is. If you lose it for whatever reason, you just create that {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}in the left pane, modify in the right, and enter "Recycle Bin" (sans quotes). For some reason, that didn't work in Vista. --- Harold ============= PCWorks Mailing List =================
