Several years ago a batch of bad capacitors was delivered to computer manufacturers. This made the news at the time. I would check to see if a recall was issued for the E-machines you have.
The capacitors are probably shorting the power supply and making the computer "dead". You could remove the capacitors and see if the power supply comes back to life. Do this only if you are not going to send the machines back on a recall.
