Jules, Sounds like the Distiller job option is set for Pressoptimized, which creates the largest file sizes of the default settings. You may want to try selecting a different job option in Distiller, such as Screenoptimized or Printoptimized. I'm not sure if they will be of high enough quality for your purposes, but you could experiment.
