I keep reading posts that say 6.0 is "very buggy" and to wait for the x.05 release. I haven't found anything buggy about it so far in my limited testing, except for that lack of ability to set tab order that Easa talked about earlier. That's not so much a bug as a retrogression. Aside from that issue; the requirement to engage in forensic interface discovery (whoever heard of reading a manual?? Nobody does that! :-); and having to adjust my tiny, fixed-font-size form fields that I shouldn't have used in the first place, I find little to criticize so far. It's sure worth a $150 upgrade.

Okay, the party's over. System info: Mac iBook, 500mHz, 300+MB RAM, OSX 10.2.6, Acro 6.0, Acro 5.05. HP4550N color PS printer.

On one of my forms, (a comment page from an appraisal report) I have a large text field--big enough to hold an entire page of text. Within that text field, it is desirable to use bold headings to separate the categories of the comments. When I set the field to allow RTF, the first thing that happens is that the already-entered (not "default text") text disappears. Clicking in the field with the hand tool makes the text reappear, and it is subject to the RTF modifications, i.e., I can boldface the category titles (or, subheads if you prefer). When I click somewhere else on the form, the text disappears from view, but is still there and can be brought back with a click. Once the text is brought back with a click, you can add more text, as you would expect. Screen update is slow, but no text is lost (after all, this is a fairly slow Mac by today's standards.)

However, (and this is the killer) while that field is set to allow RTF, the page cannot be printed, whether there's any bold text in it or not. Worse yet, Acrobat 6.0 will fail to print any part of the entire 16-page document if that one field is set to "allow RTF". If I open the doc in 5.05, I can print up to the comment page, and it aborts the print job. I can print (5.05) from the following page to the end. But it won't print anything at all in 6.0. (Failure indication: 6.0: Dialog: "The document could not be printed"; dismissing the dialog returns you to the document. Nothing prints.) (Failure indication: 5.05: same dialog. Dismissing returns to doc. Pages print up to the offending page.)

If the doc is opened in 5.05, the affected page won't print. I can get it to print by selecting the text, cutting it to the clipboard, then pasting it back into the field (apparently, 5.05 strips the formatting when you do this).

If anybody's using 6.0 for forms fill-in with RTF, beware! Test before depending on it to print. (Hmmm. Considering it's a point-zero release from Adobe, this is good advice in any case.) <-- (and this isn't a one-eyed smiley! I am not a happy camper.)
