Ironically, I was just looking through the Acrobat 6 documentation on forms
design, because one of my users wants to be able to bold, italicize,
underline, etc. text entered into form fields. This feature (allowing Rich
Text formatting) is supposedly now available in Acrobat 6.

Other new features include accommodation of "comb" fields (where there is
one box per character) and the ability to specify a mask to automatically
format entries (although these features can be accomplished in Acrobat 5
with JavaScript.)

Also, calculation expressions can now be in spreadsheet-like format, and the
tab sequence can be set more automatically, but unfortunately, it apparently
cannot be set arbitrarily as in Acrobat 5.

All form fields of a particular type (such as "Text") can be easily
selected, but apparently I can no longer select multiple fields of different
types (except perhaps by selecting *all* fields).

There are probably other new form features in Acrobat 6 that I overlooked as
I skimmed the documentation, and I didn't read the section on transferring
form data to a database.

Recently, I wrote on this forum:

We now have Acrobat 6 at my office, but I insisted on keeping Acrobat 5 on
my computer so that I could get some work done. So I agree completely with
Max Wyss' advice: Keep your copy of Acrobat 5.05 around; you will
appreciate it...
-------------------------------------------------
but we use a separate field behind each form field to provide each field a
background color that doesn't print, and Acrobat 6 does not provide for easy
manipulation of fields on-top-of fields.

But if you already have Acrobat 5, I don't think there's any big reason to
upgrade to Acrobat 6, unless the features mentioned above are needed.

P.S. Although I discovered how to designate a field to "Allow Rich Text
Formatting", I can't figure out how the user enters text that is bolded,
italicized, or underlined. If anyone knows, please tell me. Thanks.

Well I am a programmer and know JavaScript, perl, cgi, etc. So that
shouldn't be a problem. My main concern is setting in all the fields for
the form - now that's something I haven't done before. And I can find NO
documentation on 6.0 to find out if that function has been improved at all.

But thanks for the tips.

It's not a simple answer I'm afraid. It's no problem to convert your Word or
excel documents to Adobe 5.0 pdf through printing to distiller or using the
addins. It only takes a little bit of skill to create form feilds in the pdf
for data entry. The real problem is getting the data to a database. I've
been studying this important link for 2 months and still find it very
problematic. All I now about 6.0 is they want more money for the same
functionality in that you will need to get the pro version to make forms &
no mention has been made of an upgrade to the ADBC interface. You will need
to learn or hire someone who knows javascript and or perl/cgi/sql - good
luck

Just the facts

Hi there, I'm new to the list and I have a pretty simple question (I think)

I want to create interactive forms from word and excel documents that I
currently have.

(They will be stored in a database) I own 5.0 and know I can do what I need
to do, but I'm curious if I upgrade to 6.0 if there are advantages. If
anyone knows of any it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you
