They're just different versions of HTML per the W3C spec: http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/#previous with 4.01 at: http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/ HTML 4.01 is the most recent, though people are now moving to XHMTL, which is a little cleaner and more in-line with XML specs.
