It has already been established, that transitions only work properly when one is in single page mode. This kind of makes sense because there is only one transition which does work at a given time.
Up until Acrobat 5, the transitions assigned directly to the page (for example via PDFMARK) worked in normal view, and not only in full screen view. Apparently, some (please add your term here) at Adobe considered that to be a bug (transitions are presentation stuff and our customers want transitions for full screen view only). So, since Acrobat 6, transitions no longer work in normal view...
Now, for the OS X issue, transitions were simply not implemented (or "officially spoken" available) under OS X in any view. It was only with Acrobat 6 that transitions became available for OS X (as above, in full screen view only). However, transitions work "normal" when running under OS 9.
So, we have the following conclusions:
In normal view, single page mode, transitions work under any version at 5.05 and older, whereas for Mac only under OS 9.
In full screen view, transitions work on any platform and under any version except 5.05 under OS X.
Hope, this can help.

Has anybody run into oddities with (?) various versions of Acrobat/Reader or user settings re transitions?
I have a PDF with individual per-page transitions, which I've posted at
http://www.rpdslides.com/test/test_transitions.pdf
in case anyone wants to have a look. It's <10kb but note: the transitions are deliberately set *very* slow; if it appears to stall on the first slide, give it a bit of time.
It works fine (displays transitions) here in
Acrobat 5.0.5 and Reader 5.0.1 under XP/Home Reader (with Search) 5.0.5 under XP/Tablet
It doesn't work (no transitions) in
Acrobat 6.0.0 Professional under Win2k Reader 5.0.5 (w/o Search) Reader under Win2k Reader 5.0.5 Mac under Mac OS X 10.2.6
If I toggle the Page view from Continuous to Single in Reader 5.0.5 on Win2K, transitions work when I reopen the PDF. The same isn't true of Mac 5.0.5 or Win 6.0.0 however.
A client reports that while they can't see the transitions in this test file, they *can* see transitions in another file from a different (unknown) source. I'm trying to get a copy of that file right now.
