What you are referrng to is most likely not an "Adobe offering" at all... but simply an implementation of PDF.
So, the answer to your question is "yes" you can produce the same (actually, better) results with Acrobat 6.0 - we do this work here all the time.

We're still producing self contained PDF on Hybrid CDs using Acrobat 4.0.5 because (last time I checked) Acrobat Reader for Mac will not launch from a CD using Acrobat 5 or 6. I know Adobe "forbids" distribution of non-current versions of Reader, but we need to be as inclusive as possible, and Macs are a large part of the audience for some of our projects.
How do you handle your Mac side these days?
BTW, we use a similar interface for the PC partition called AutoRun CD from ADEW Software.
