Dear Yvonne,

Here's some notes on how to create forms with Acrobat 6 (full version). I'm not
whether form-creating capabilities were similar
well-developed in earlier versions.

A fairly easy starting-point for a PDF form is to set up the layout in Word, convert
to PDF, then activate the fields. As far as I can see a
form set up in Word won't convert to PDF with active fields, but I may be wrong about
this.

Once you have a form layout converted to PDF, here's what you do to create input
fields:
- Go to Tools | Advanced Editing | Forms
- Select the text field tool - this is more complicated than radio buttons etc., so
once you get the idea of what you do with this one, the
other types of field will appear simple.
- Draw a selection area where you want the text field to be. When you have done this,
a red bounding box should appear round the area, and
the text field properties box should appear onscreen. If it doesn't, right-click on
the field's bounding box.
- In the properties box, the following settings are most likely to be required:
Appearance | Font size: default is Auto, and this can come out very large. Set to a
fixed size - 10 or 12 is usually right. Font: remember
that Arial Narrow is an excellent choice if space for input is restricted.
Options | check multiline on unless you really want the input for the field to be
restricted to a single line of text.

These are the items which most commonly need changing.

Hope that's a bit of help.

Jos

Greetings,

I am a novice at this pdf "thing" so please be patient
with me.

I am sometimes able to type information on-line on
forms that have been saved in pdf format and then
print the completed form. An example would be the IRS
forms. How is this done? I would like to put some
scholarship applications on a web page. These forms
would be pdfs. What does one do to make these pdfs
able to be filled out on-line?

I am most grateful for any help!
