Initially I thought that the new interface was confusing but now that I am learning about the Professional version in depth I see that Adobe really didn't have much choice. (I am tech editing a book on Acrobat 6 Professional). There are so many more features that have been added and will be added in the future - so the interface had to evolve to accommodate it all. Major features of the new Professional version make it indispensable for people who get involved in and who anticipate more need for advanced features: - Involved with CAD drawings? Well then you will probably appreciate the layering capabilities built into PDF 1.5 (which can only be created using Distiller 6, Professional). You will also realize why it requires a new interface tab for navigating between layers, merging them, applying overrides for viewing or printing, etc. - There are also new navigation tabs for comments, destinations, articles, layers, and signatures. There are new navigation tools called the loupe tool and the dynamic zoom tool which can clutter the interface but are useful nonetheless. - Involved with high quality printing projects? Then you will love the ability to preview separations, check for PDF/x compatibility and optimize files for different versions and file sizes (without reburning). - Make presentations or multimedia using PDFs? Maybe you will want to use the Watermarking or Backgrounds capabilities (with opacity% control) - or perhaps you'll find it advantageous to apply footers and headers (including dates and page numbers) to groups of pages in a compiled PDF. You can also create a single multipage PDF from a variety of PDFs using a single open function. - Want to cross-document search a folder full of PDFs without creating an index? You can do that with Acrobat 6. - As a graphic designer, I love the ability to print out client comments with the source page image on a single sheet. I don't know how Adobe managed to put leader lines between each comment and its position on the source image. - Use tags or anticipate getting more involved with XML and structured documents? You probably don't but will have to deal with it down the road. Acrobat is making major strides in that area meaning it is not likely to be pre-empted by some lesser technology in the future. Acrobat 6 - I like it. -- C.
