Hello All,
When I purchased my upgrade to Acrobat 6.0.0 in mid 2003, my initial
testing identified several fatal problems which have prevented me
from using it. These were reported to Adobe and acknowledged.
I have just installed my updates for Acrobat Pro 6.0.1 and Reader 6.0.1
and I find that one serious problem remains:
On MAC OSX with Reader 6.0.1, there is NO backward compatibility for
search indexes created using Acrobat 5. You get a warning about a
damaged index, and are asked to rebuild it.
This issue does not exist on PC-Windows platform. Backward compatibility
is OK on PC-Windows platform.
I have done some research and I find that:
On PC-Windows Acrobat 6.0.1, there are two SEARCH plugins:
search.api from LexTek for the new format of search index
search5.api from Verity for the old format of search index
On Mac OSX, there is only one plugin - search.api from LexTek.
This seems to be due to the lack of a verity search plugin for
OSX.
Therefore, I ask the question:
Will Acrobat 6.0+ on Mac OSX ever support old search indexes created
using Acrobat 5 and earlier ? Or will this issue just be ignored
until it goes away?
Personally, I would settle for a warning dialog which says that
("The attached index is not available on Mac OSX due to lack
of suitable plugin") or similar, instead of an error dialog which
makes the publisher (me) seem at fault.
I have an experimental solution which works but is not ideal. I have
constructed a PDF document which uses javascript to determine the
version of reader running, and mount either a V5 search index or
a V6 search index. However, the mounted index name does not appear in
the BASIC SEARCH OPTIONS pane of Acrobat 6.0.1. However, its name is
in the list of currently selected indexes in the ADVANCED SEARCH OPTIONS
pane of Acrobat 6.0.1.
It seems that the only way to make the search index appear in the
BASIC SEARCH OPTIONS pane is to list it in the DOCUMENT PROPERTIES
SEARCH INDEX field, but this will force you to hardwire either a
V5 or V6 index, and so the javascript loses its usefullness.
AAArgh.
Any suggestions welcome.
George.
