On MAC OSX with Reader 6.0.1, there is NO backward compatibility for search indexes created using Acrobat 5. You get a warning about a damaged index, and are asked to rebuild it.
Correct but this is NOT an Acrobat 6 problem - it was there in Acrobat 5 on Mac OS X as well. There has NEVER BEEN support for Acrobat 5 indices on Mac OS X.
On Mac OSX, there is only one plugin - search.api from LexTek. This seems to be due to the lack of a verity search plugin for OSX.

Will Acrobat 6.0+ on Mac OSX ever support old search indexes created using Acrobat 5 and earlier ? Or will this issue just be ignored until it goes away?
The latter.
Verity doesn't offer its search technology for Mac OS X...
