These days imagesetters are usually linearized through a loop that only involves the rip and the imagesetter itself.
Transfer functions can also address the dot gain of printing technologies, although I think that when icc profiles are used they already take it into account.
It is my understanding that transfer functions are now mostly used to implement graphic effects.
