It's a hack solution for simple problems in certain workflows...

how to make a black and white PDF from a full-color, CMYK flavor.

I would never want to leave color management (even conversion to grayscale) to a printer driver - you have ZERO control over profiles, etc.

PDF Optimizer does not change color space;

It most certainly DOES support changing the color space! That's one of the major new advances in version 2.0 (which shipped in Dec.). It offers a complete color management/correction system based on both algorithmic as well as ICC profile-based conversions. It is one of the only tools on the market to also support simulation profiles. It is the ONLY tool to provide "gray reduction" technology to auto-correct issues with "blacks" and separated workflow.

For those who have ongoing needs, and can afford the investment, I agree
with your assessment, and would add that Quite a Box of Tricks is a good bet
(and cheaper than Pitstop) for changing color space and downsampling.

For downsampling, yes, but I wouldn't recommend QABOT for color management. It has a number of glaring flaws that make it unacceptable for professional color management including its use of the Microsoft Color Manager.

Naturally, the best PDF is one that is made natively. In other words, it's
best to try to make any changes in the original file whenever possible.

No argument there!!
