A colleague in our controlled documents group has been making extensive use of the Acrobat cataloging and indexing functions, and up until now he has been using Acrobat 5. Now he is being asked to move to Acrobat 6 and he is finding he is having a number of problems. I am not well versed in this area, so I promised I would forward his concerns to this list to see if anyone can help..... 1. AutoIndex feature does not work properly. When Acrobat Reader opens a PDF file, you can attach an index file. We use this feature to automatically add many indexes to a document category search PDF. This feature works properly in Acrobat 5 reader. With Acrobat 6.01 Reader, only the last index file read is used and all others are discarded. 2. AcroRd32.exe grows in memory When a user opens many PDF files in one Reader 6.01 session, the amount of memory used by AcroRd32.exe grows with each PDF opened. In a one hour session , the memory usage went from 7MB to over 45 MB with only 20 files opened. This appears of happen independently of the settings of the Reader cache that are available in the Preferences panel. See also clear cache below. 3. Manually added indexes are not released when Reader 6.01 is closed (or when user logs off and reboots workstation). If a user manually adds indexes to Reader 6.01, when the session is closed and then re-opened, the same indexes still appear (as well as the memory usage that AcroRd32.exe reports in Task Manager). Reader 5 will release these indexes when closed. Note, that even if the user logs off and powers off the workstation and then re-boots and logs in , the indexes are still there. 4. Clear cache does not work. The clear cache button in Reader appears to have no effect on memory usage as noted in 2 and 3 above. 5. Adobe 6 Reader Advanced Search Issues: a) If the user clicks on the Search button, Reader 6.01 will take a very long time to complete (more than 5 minutes or even longer, over an hour is possible) and the CPU Resources will climb to 50-70% unless the user hits the stop button. b) If a user loads indexes as in 3 above and clicks on Search, Reader 6.01 will take a very long time to complete (more than 3 minutes). Reader 5 will complete the same search in less than one second.
