Thanks Todd and Mark, exactly what I was looking for, I had tried the '%' comment thing already, but didn't even think about a binary append (DUH)...that should work, can just tag it in the beginning or end, we only want to stick a single line in there, so number of '%' in the file won't be a problem.
Aandi, I agree...this is a kludge...but the client isn't concerned about anything but the Adobe reader and the docs won't be going to other 'consumers' outside the company...it's a fairly typical day in the life here...but it's just a means to an end as w/ any development tool or technology...
Thanks for the tips...
Chris

i also need to do this w/o installing Acrobat on the client/server machine...licensing and cost issues w/ doing that...i've worked w/ the Acrobat SDK some in the past, and this isn't an option in this case.
from everything i've read, sounds like this isn't possible due to the structure of the PDF file...once edited and resaved, the file becomes un-usable...even if i just open a PDF in notepad and resave it, it gets corrupted.
any ideas to accomplish this w/o having Acrobat installed and using the object model to modify the PDF ?
This comes up from time to time with KDK and XRX commands that RIPs on Heidelberg and Xerox B/W printers use. These commands are preceeded with %'s as in
%%KDK ... %%XRX... %... %PDF-
You can prepend these commands to a PDF file with a binary copy in dos:
copy header+foo.pdf output.pdf
or you can do it with simple OPEN/CLOSE/READ/WRITE commands.
You have to make sure that the copy (or open/read/write) is binary.
There are some issues with doing this - Acrobat does not like too many %'s before the %PDF.
