The exact error I get is "Could not find the Extended Graphics State named 'GS1'."
I get this with Adobe Reader (6.0.1).
I thought the BX/EX would skip over this, but it has no effect on the error message.

I have a lot of PDFs that I need to fix. They have various errors such as "extended graphics state", and also some warnings. What is wrong with Extended Graphics state? What is the EXACT error you get from Acrobat? Can you post one/some examples??
Is there an API (C++) I use to perform or assist in this? I've been able to fix the "extended graphics state" by replacing its entries ("/GS") with a generic fill entry ("/F") that I copied from elsewhere in the file.I don't believe that is really what you wanted to do - but again, without seeing the files, I can't truely say...
Making the extended graphics state an option with "BX ... EX" is preferred but wasn't working for some reason. Why would it? Those just tell the PDF parser to beware there MAY be unknown ops in here - but if it knows what to do with them, it will...
Anyway, once I 'fix' it, I can then open it with acrobat, which performs a "rebuild" as it opens, then (aside from warnings) can be viewed fine with acrobat. But without the rebuild I can't open it anywhere else, presumably because the xref table is wrong due to the modifications.Correct.
So I guess my question is, is there something that will either 1) correct and clean PDFs automatically so I don't have to do it manually, or 2) allow me to easily perform such a PDF rebuild after I've modified it?You are welcome to give our PDF Enhancer a try on your files - http://www.apago.com/enhancer.html. It will fix a number of common errors in PDF documents, as well as applying whatever set of enhancements you'd like.
