The JPEG image, although it displays as black and white in this particular
case, describes itself as a 3 component 8 bits per component image.  Is this
suitable for ImageMask?  Shouldn't an ImageMask image have just have 1 bit
per component? 
You advice is appreciated

         Of course it does - it's an image, so the bits of the image are 
rendered...
