Is this > suitable for ImageMask? JPEG images are never "pure" black or white except by accident in small patches. The losses in JPEG decoding ensure that. If you want a mask you will need to extract the data, and convert to true one bit. The JPEG losses can easily be made up for by rounding values that are above or below 0.5 to 0.0 or 1.0. Once the data is repacked, you could recompress it - but absolutely not with JPEG (DCT), which is only for 8 bit samples. Only then can you use it to take a colour.
