After you run pdfedit -d5 >out 2>&1 there is an empty out file?
 (when you redirect output to a file, there is no more output in console).

Yes, the out file is empty.



This is really strange. Can you try to send output of strace?

e. g.
strace pdfedit > out 2>&1
