This is exactly the functionality I've seen.  Some pdf creators seem to
use an object per character and these highlight on a character basis in
pdfedit.  Others create blocks and the blocks are highlighted.  Acrobat
and others almost seem to use a graphic overlay for highlighting.

I do hope more developers start contributing to pdfedit.  It is a great
project and sorely needed.  Alas, my time is tied up on the ISCS network
security project (http://iscs.sourceforge.net ) and I'll probably start
working with the X2Go folks as well so I won't be able to help much.
